Cool idea for EzPortal: VALID XHTML 1.0
« on: July 02, 2009, 08:41:32 pm »
Peering down at the bottom of the site here, I see.....

http://validator.w3.org/check/referer

Try it!  Your portal makes it blow chunks.  SMF produces clean code, but your portal doesn't.

The greater the number of errors, the higher the likelihood that ONE browser or another will render the page improperly, since the code is all mangled.

Haven't you folks EVER clicked that link??  Doing a SEARCH on the forum, I see exactly ONE mention of the W3C Validator.  Kindly bookmark that.

You *can* make most of the code here compliant, 'cos I've done it for a different portal integrated with SMF.  The only thing that will cause a lot of work is blocks or modules that contain embedded JavaScript, as there's not really a good way to do that in XHTML 1.0 that I've found.  The shoutbox and probably a couple of other blocks will thus throw errors, no matter what you do.

Merely a suggestion, as it's apparently slipped your minds or been utterly ignored.  :o

Meh for this site here it isn't. But the main portal really is.

I don't really care that much for xhtml as long as the site works that's all I care about in the major browsers.

Gosh, it produced 189 errors on my site.  But the site seems to be working fine and I am using IE 8,  Should I be worried about an eventual crash of my site?

Nope I wouldn't worry at all. Xhtml is likely to die off now and be replaced with html5 xhtml2.0 was cancelled. I have never seen a browser require 100% working xhtml for a site to work.

Marian, your site shouldn't 'blow up' or crash due to coding errors, but it's possible that some people will see pages rendered incorrectly depending on the severity of the errors.  Many of the errors (like missing ALT tags) will have absolutely no effect on the browsers, but things like improperly nested DIVs can make a browser get very confused.

EzPortal doesn't appear to be NEARLY as bad in that respect as the other portal I corrected... THAT one actually had blocks / modules falling out of place with one browser (I think it was an older Opera); it looked pretty ugly until I fixed some of the more glaring mistakes.  I use 'portable' versions of multiple browsers and usually several different VERSIONS of each browser when I test a site because people aren't always running the latest and greatest version.

<grin>  I see someone here has taken my suggestion to heart!  Instead of >100 errors with the Validator, it'd down to less than 10 today on several of the pages here.  Big 'thumbs up' to whichever person corrected the code!  I realize it's a lot of work weeding through the error list at the Validator and then back-tracking where the issue arises from.

That sound good, maybe it will get pass down in the next released.  I have just recently, yesterday in fact, switch to Firefox because of security warning I was getting from Kaspersky about a link in IE to a phishing site that stole credit card numbers and passwords.  Kaspersky blocked it but it was onging every minute or so.  Got real tired of the popup giving the warning.
