ezBlock Permissions.
« on: September 29, 2009, 11:02:46 am »
As any admin, sometimes I have problems with a user or two who refuse to behave and I may want to deny them access to some parts of the forum/website. In my case I'd like to stop someone from posting in the Shoutbox without affecting anyone else.

So I create a special non-postcount-based membergroup and I put this member in there. Then I go to the Shoutbox ezBlock and I see to it that the new membergroup is unchecked under Permissions.

Yet the user can still see the Shoutbox because they're also in the Regular Members group (like everyone else always is) and that one is checked in the Shoutbox Permissions (and always will be, because the default is to have access for any new member that might come to the forum).

My suggestion: turn Permissions into Restrictions and make each checkbox deny access to the associated membergroup, i.e. to any user that is in that group, no matter what other groups they may be in. I'm willing to bet any forum administrator would agree that this is a much more useful way to control ezBlock accessibility.

Thanks!

Are you setting up as additional groups? Or is there only primary group?

I tried it both ways and it still didn't work. Besides, the primary group determines the text that appears publicly under the member's name in the forum and I don't want to have to change that every time I put someone in a restricted group. I want to be able to "silently" add restrictions for my users.

You know that's a good idea.  That way no one knows they are restricted and just assume every one is.  I know I had trouble setting permission until I unchecked the 'regular members' for every board and just allowed the primary membergroup dictate what was permitted.  But I think that is set in SMF and has little to do with permission for EXBlocks, am I right?

No, that's not the point for me. I will clearly tell the restricted user they're being punished, I may even post about it publicly, but I don't want that information written absolutely everywhere their name appears in a post (because that's what happens when you set a primary group - you're putting up information about that user everywhere in the forum where they've posted so far and everywhere they will post in the future; this seems excessive to me).

That would work if you could explicitly give ezBlock permissions to postcount-based groups as well, but you can't - they don't show up on the Permissions list.

And if you don't put a check mark next to Regular Members or any postcount-based groups, you're essentially making "No Permission" the default state of any new user joining the forum (because these groups are the only ones the forum updates automatically with new members). I definitely don't want to have to give permissions manually to every new member.

And all that has to change for this to become simple is the power to grant access, which should become the power to deny access.

That's right, I had forgot that the EZBlocks aren't set the way the boards are.  Maybe they can get this for you/us.
